After a brief period of twitter and facebook experience, I thought I should share and discuss the usage, do and donts of online social networking. I humbly disclaim upfront that this is not a generalized article nor a guideline. This just an effort to share and invoke a productive discussion on what are the things to and what are things that to be avoided.

Instant Messaging and Chatrooms
Once the IM and Chatrooms were the most attended online activity. Followed by the high rate of abuse and identity theft lead to a downtime of this platform. Many of the popular providers stopped the service as well. The mobile version of the IM are now very common in India.

Blog are really helping to share the information on Experience, Literature works, writings, scribblings, experiences etc where the communication is limited. Even though the comment features are available, it can be set to certain privacy settings which will prevent unsolicited/irrelevant comment postings.

Micro Blogs
Micro blogs are the grapevine in the current online scenario where users are limited to post with in a specified maximum characters, mostly up to one short message character limits. Twitter is a popular micro blogging service. Micro blogs are very much popular because of the possibility of interacting with famous personalities and celebrities and the convenience to post the current thoughts running in your mind instantly. There are other micro blogs like digg are also getting widespread attention.

  1. Good post Nimod.

    Some more Tips:

    Facebook :
    1. Never add/accept unknown people.
    2. Make sure you know how your profile looks like for an unknown user. Privacy settings can be set and viewed at http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy
    3. If you have installed any Rogue Applications to your facebook profile, due to one of the "Tag-Jacking" Scams, you may be currently spamming your wall and or your friends News Feeds with the Rogue Applications viral/scam messages/photos. You must remove the messages/photo from your wall by deleting the post and remove the rogue app by uninstalling it from your facebook profile

    Twitter
    1. Make sure you follow the right person and more importantly has got the right followers.
    2. Unless you are not a celebrity or a social worker it is recommended that you Protect your tweets so that an unknown user wouldn't trace your activities.
    3. Never reveal your exact location each and every hour, especially if you are traveling to another destinaion (For eg: A person settled in Mumbai tweeting 'Am now at Pizza Hut in Forum Mall, Bengaluru'). This will not only provide a chance to get traced, but also a security concern. (PS: Now this can be argued....)
    4. Never reveal any confidential work related information on Twitter. Eg: The name of your clients, client specific tools and applicatons that you use in your project, comparisons with your competitor etc. You can boast your achievements, but within a limit. Twitter is not the platform for just show-off.

  2. Thanks Vishnu.
Yes the points you have given are valid. I think the mobile applications like Gravity, may use your GPS to give the location, it may lead to another issue..
